6 Signs of an Unhealthy Gut

Maybe you’re wondering if your gut health could improve or if it’s really that bad? Maybe you don’t know that your gut affects so many parts of your body, some of these symtpoms you would never connect to being a gut issue? Whether you have 1 or all 6 of these symptoms, it’s worth looking into a Gut Health Nutritionist and Health Coach to see if you can get those unwanted symptoms to go away and figure out the root cause of them.

Here are 10 of the most common signs that I see of an unhealthy gut:

  1. Bloating

This one is by far the most common symptom people come to me to get relief from! Why do you get so bloated when your gut is unhealthy? Unbalanced good and bad bacteria in the gut, constipation, poor nutrient absorption, low stomach acid, inflammatory foods, eating too quickly, and leaky gut - to name a few.

2. low immune system

Did you know that over half of your immune system is in your gut? When you keep catching a cold, sinus infection, viruses or are sick for long periods of time, something is up with your immune system. Healing your gut strengthens your immune system because it gives you more good bacteria to fight off the bad guys!

3. Constipation

You should be '“going” at LEAST once a day, pain free, soft, and all in one piece. Have stool that is hard to pass? Have stool that is just a bunch of tiny pieces? These are all signs that something is not quite right with your gut.

4. food intolerances

Having a lot of food intolerances or general discomfort when eating specific types of food can be a sign of leaky gut. The good news is, once your gut is healed you can try reintroducing these foods back into your diet to see if they are still triggering for your body!

5. Brain fog, fatigue, and depression

Most of your body’s serotonin (aka the happy hormone) is made in the gut! If that’s not reason alone to take gut health seriously I don’t know what is! This hormone also helps regulate our sleeping along with melatonin, which is also critical for sleep.

6. Hormonal Imbalances

Your gut synthesizes, regulates, and discards so many of our important hormones! When your gut is unhealthy we see a lot of imbalanced hormones and unwanted symptoms. Estrogen for example is only removed through bowel movements. If you find yourself constantly constipated you could have estrogen dominance symptoms.

Interested in fixing your gut and learning more about what might be contributing to your symptoms? I recommend hiring a nutritionist or health coach (I am both!) to guide, support, and teach you through your healing journey. If I’d had someone to help me navigate all there is to know about gut health and help me build the habits I needed for success, I would have healed and been in less chronic pain so MUCH sooner.
