What should I be eating?!

I get this question all the time on social media and from my clients: “What should I be eating?!”

With so many different diet trends out there like paleo, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, keto, low fat, it can feel so overwhelming to know where to even start or which ones are even healthy.

The truth is most of these diets focus on restricting what you eat instead of focusing on what you should be eating for optimum health.

We want to feed our bodies nourishing foods to reduce and fight off inflammation, feel energized, heal our gut, and have regular bowel movements.

What we choose to eat is often more important than what we choose to exclude from our diet.

There are some foods that will delay healing or even start to harm our bodies, that’s why I’ve come up with a list of 8 easy swaps so you can keep making your favorite recipes and give your body the most nourishing option.

  1. Broth: Any time you are cooking soup, cooking in the crockpot, or adding water or broth to anything, swap it with bone broth. Bone broth has so many gut healing properties because of the amino acids in it.

  2. Sugars: Anytime a recipe calls for cane sugar I swap it with honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar. These have lower glycemic indexes, a slightly higher vitamin and mineral count, and antioxidants to help fight gut inflammation.

  3. Oils: Most recipes call for oils of some kind. Instead of canola oil which is linked to inflammation in the body, swap it for Avocado oil. It is one of the healthiest unsaturated fats you can eat.

  4. Soy sauce: This product naturally has gluten in it. I love coconut aminos or liquid aminos because they are gluten free and do not have preservatives in them.

  5. Eggs: Pasture raised eggs will give you the most nutritional value with more healthy fats, less unhealthy fats, and more vitamins and minerals then traditional eggs. *Support companies that treat their animals humanely!

  6. Milk: Dairy can be hard on our guts especially when we are trying to heal them. Swap coconut or almond milk for almost any recipe with baking or adding cream to soups .

  7. Tortillas: when you’re shopping for tortillas you might be surprised at everything that’s in them! Tortillas only need water, corn, oil, and maybe a few other ingredients.

  8. Bread: Bread is a staple in almost every home! It can be so nutritious and full of fiber or vitamins and minerals. Swap your refined grains for 100% whole grain products. My favorite brand is Dave’s Killer Bread.
